Chapter Eleven

Final Passover With His Disciples - Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested

The Passover Supper

Leaders Plot to Kill Jesus

Now it had happened, on Tuesday, the twelfth of Nisan, once Jesus had finished saying all these things1 that He said to His disciples, "As You know, the day after tomorrow, that is within two days,2 it will be the Passover followed by the feast of Unleavened Bread.34 And then the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified" (M 26:1-2).

2 Now the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people had all gathered together into the courtyard of the high priest's palace (who happened to be a man named Caiaphas at that time) to talk about how they were going to do this. But they had said, "Not during the feast, or the people may riot"5 (M 26:3-58:74, 10:36K 14:1-28:74).

Judas Confers with the Chief Priests

3 Then, the next day, on Wednesday, the thirteenth of Nisan,6 the Feast of Unleavened Bread was coming up (the Feast of Unleavened Bread and Passover both, together, being called the Passover),7 and the Chief Priests and the Scribes were trying to find a way to kill Him. But they were having a hard time since they were afraid of the people (10:69L 22:1-2).

4 Also at that time, Satan had entered Judas (the one called Iscariot8),9 who was one of the twelve. Satan having entered him, he then went his way and negotiated with the Chief Priests and the Temple security officers on how he could hand Jesus over to them,10 asking them, "What are you willing to give me if I hand Him over to you?"11 (8:78M 26:14-15a, 8:78K 14:10, L 22:3-4).

5 Well, this made them very happy because it solved their problem on how to arrest Jesus. They decided to pay Judas thirty pieces of silver, and he agreed. From then on, he looked for the opportunity to hand Jesus12 over to them without all the people seeing it13 (M 26:15b-1611:24, K 14:1111:24, L 22:5-6).

Gentiles Seek to Speak with Jesus

6 Now there were also some Greeks among those who had come up to worship at the feast, and the Greeks14 went up to Philip (who was from Bethsaida of Galilee) and asked him, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus." In response, Philip came and told Andrew. Andrew and Philip then went and told Jesus (8:86J 12:20-22).

7 Jesus answered, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. And I assure you, if a grain of wheat does not fall into the ground and die, it remains only a seed. However, if it does die, it will produce much fruit. Whoever loves his life will lose it, and whoever hates his life in this world will guard it for eternal life" (J 12:23-25).

8 "If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me. For where I am, there My servant will be also. And if anyone serves Me, My Father will honor him" (J 12:26).

Who Has Believed Our Report

9 "For now, My soul is troubled. So what shall I say, 'Father, save Me from this hour?' No, but, rather, this is exactly why I have come into this hour. So, Father, glorify Your name" (J 12:27-28a).

10 Just then, a voice came out of heaven and said, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again" (J 12:28b).

11 When the people who were standing near by heard this, they said it had thundered. Others said, "No, an angel has spoken to Him" (J 12:29).

12 Jesus said, "This voice did not come so that I could hear it,15 it was for you. However, now it is time for the judgment of this world because the ruler of this world will now be thrown out. For if I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men to Myself"16 (J 12:30-32).

13 Jesus17 had said this to point out the kind of death He was going to die. But the people said, "We have heard from the law that the Anointed One remains forever, so how can You now say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?"18 (J 12:33-34).

14 Jesus said, "The light is only with you a little while longer, so walk while you still have the light. Walk in the light so that no darkness will overcome you. For whoever walks in the dark does not know where he is going. While you still have the light, put your trust in the light, so that you can become sons of the light" (J 12:35-36a).

15 Jesus said these things; then He went away and hid from them (J 12:36b).

He Who Believes in Me, Believes in Him Who Sent Me

16 And even though He had done so many signs right in front of them, they still did not believe in Him. And this was, so that the words of Isaiah the prophet would come to pass, when he said,

17 "Yhvh, who has believed our report;
And to whom has the arm of Yhvh been revealed?"
(Isaiah 53:1, and consider this along with Deuteronomy 4:34-35)
(J 12:37-38a)

18 Therefore, they could not believe. For as Isaiah has also said,

19 "He has blinded their eyes
And hardened their hearts.19
Or else, they would have seen20 with their eyes,
Understood with their hearts, turn,
And I would heal21 them."
(Isaiah 6:10)
(J 12:38b-40).

20 Isaiah had said this because he saw the glory of Jesus and spoke about Him22 (See Isaiah 6:1-9) (J 12:41).

21 Even so, many of the rulers believed in Him. But because of the Pharisees, they would not openly say that they did so they would not be put out of the congregation. For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God (J 12:42-43).

22 Then Jesus - now back with them23 - said loudly, "Whoever believes in Me does not believe in Me but in the One who sent Me. And whoever sees Me is seeing the One who sent Me. I have come as a light into the world so that whoever believes in Me should not remain in darkness" (see John 1:4-7) (J 12:44-46).

23 "And if anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come into the world to judge the world but to save it" (J 12:47).

24 "Therefore, whoever rejects Me and does not receive the words I have to say, that will judge him. For the things I have said will judge him in the last day." (J 12:48).

25 "Besides, I have said nothing on My own. The Father who sent Me has commanded Me on what to talk about and on what to say; and I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I say, I say it exactly as the Father told Me" (J 12:49-50).

Jesus Sends Disciples to Prepare the Passover

26 Now on the first day of the feast of Unleavened Bread,24 when they needed to kill the Passover lamb (See Deuteronomy 16:6),25 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying "Go and prepare for us to eat the Passover" (11:5M 26:17a, 11:5K 14:12a, L 22:7-8).

27 The disciples came to Him and asked, "Where do you want us to go to prepare for You to eat the Passover?" (M 26:17b, K 14:12b, L 22:9).

28 He sent those two of His disciples out,26 saying, "Go into the city (Jerusalem), and behold, once you have entered it, you will meet a man carrying a container of water. Follow him to the house he enters. Then tell the master of that house, 'The teacher says, "My time is at hand, I will keep the Passover at your house. Where is the guestroom I may use to eat the Passover with My disciples?'" (M 26:18, K 14:13-14, L 22:10-11).

29 "He will show you an already furnished and ready large upper room. Prepare everything for us to eat there" (K 14:15, L 22:12).

30 They went out and found it just as He had said. They did what Jesus had told them to do and prepared the Passover (M 26:19, K 14:16, L 22:13).

They Eat the Passover

31 Then, in the evening, when the hour had come, He reclined at the table with the twelve apostles. As they were eating, He said, "I tell you the truth, one of you here eating with Me now will betray Me!" (M 26:20-21, K 14:17-18, L 22:14).

32 Hearing this, they began to discuss among themselves about which one of them it could possibly be that was going to do this, and they began to grieve deeply. One by one, each of them came to Him and said, "Lord is it Me?" (M 26:2211:46, K 14:1911:46, L 22:23).

Jesus Washes Their Feet

33 And even though Jesus had known - before the Passover27 - that the hour for Him to leave the world and go back to the Father had come, having loved those in the world who were His own, He loved them to the end (J 13:1).

34 So during the supper, the Accuser28 having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Jesus; and Jesus, knowing that the Father had given everything into His hands, and that He came from God and was soon going back to God, got up from the supper table and laid His main clothes to the side (J 13:2-4a).

35 He took a towel, wrapped it around Himself, and tucked it in. After that He poured water into a large bowl and began to wash the disciples' feet and then wipe them dry with the towel he had wrapped around Himself. But when He came to Simon Peter, Peter said, "Lord, are You going to wash my feet?" (J 13:4b-6).

36 "You do not realize what it is I am doing right now," Jesus answered, "but you will understand it later" (J 13:7).

37 Peter said, "Lord, You will never wash my feet!" (J 13:8a).

38 Jesus answered him again, "If I do not wash you, you have nothing to do with Me" (J 13:8b).

39 So then Simon Peter said, "Lord, then not only my feet but my hands and head as well!" (J 13:9).

40 "He who has already bathed," Jesus said, "does not need another bath. He only needs to clean his feet once and awhile. For the rest of him is already clean. And you are already clean. But not every one of you (For He knew who it was who was going to betray Him, and that is why He said, "Not all of you are clean") (J 13:10-11).

41 Having finished washing their feet, then, He took His main garment, put it back on, and went back to reclining at the table. Then He asked: "Do you know what it is I have just done to you?" (J 13:12).

42 "You call me Teacher and Lord, and it is good that you say that. For that is what I am. But if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, then you are obligated to wash each other's feet as well. For I have given you an example, that you should do just as I have done. For I assure you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent greater than the one who sent him" (J 13:13-16).

43 "Now if you know these things, you are blessed if you do them" (See Deuteronomy 28:1-2) (J 13:17).

Disciples Wonder "Who is the One Who Will Betray Him"

44 "I am not talking about all of you, however. For I know the ones I have chosen. But this is so that the following Scripture may come to pass,

'He who has eaten My bread29
Has lifted his heel up against Me.'"
(Psalms 41:9)
(J 13:18)

45 "And I tell you this before it happens, so that when it does you can believe that I AM (See Exodus 3:14). For I assure you: He who receives whomever I send receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives the One who sent Me." After Jesus had said this, He was troubled in His spirit and testified, saying, "Yet, behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me at the table. Truly, truly, I tell you, one of you will betray Me" (L 22:21, J 13:19-21).

46 When the disciples heard this, the disciples looked at each other at a loss as to which one of them He was talking about (J 13:22).

47 Then, one of the disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining in the seat that had him leaning in the area of Jesus' chest.30 So Simon Peter motioned for that one to ask Jesus whom it was that He was talking about. Therefore, he leaned back onto His chest and asked Him, "Lord, who is it?" (J 13:23-25).

48 Jesus answered, "He is one of the twelve, one who has dipped his hand with Me into the bowl, that will betray Me. The Son of Man will certainly go just as it has been determined and written about Him. But woe to the man from whom the Son of Man is going to be betrayed. For it would have been better for him if he had never been born. It is the one to whom I will give a piece of bread to after I have dipped it." Then, having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon (11:30M 26:23-24, 11:30K 14:20-2111:54, L 22:22, J 13:26).

49 Judas, the one who was going to betray Him, then said, "It is not me, is it, Rabbi?" (M 26:25a).

50 "You have said it yourself!" Jesus answered (M 26:25b).

Judas Goes Out to Betray Jesus

51 After the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said, "Hurry up and do what you are going to do." However, no one at the table knew the reason why He had said this to him. Some of them thought it was since Judas had the money box that Jesus was telling him, in other words, "Go and buy the things we need for the feast," or else, telling him to go give something to the poor. And so having received the piece of bread he immediately left. By then it was night (J 13:27-30).

52 After Judas left, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. And if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself. And He will glorify Him immediately" (J 13:31-32).

The New Covenant

53 Then He said, "I have eagerly desired to eat this specific Passover with you before I suffer, and I tell you, I will not eat of it again until it happens in it's fullness in the kingdom of God" (L 22:15-16).

54 Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and said, "Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you, I will not drink from the fruit of the vine from now on until the day I drink it renewed with you in the kingdom of God, the kingdom of My Father, when it comes"31 (11:56M 26:2911:89, K 14:23a & 25, L 22:17-18).

55 Then they all drank from it (K 14:23b).

56 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take it and eat a piece. For this is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me" (M 26:26, K 14:22, L 22:19).

57 Then they ate the remainder of the meal (This was only added for clarification).

58 And in the same way, after they had eaten, He took the cup, gave thanks, and said: "All of you here,32 drink from it. For this cup is the new covenant33 in My blood, which is poured out for you and many others, for the release of sins"34 (M 26:27-2811:52, K 14:24, L 22:20).

Jesus Teaches His Disciples Many Things at the Passover Supper

A New Commandment

59 "Now, however, little children, I am only with you a short while longer. But you will look for Me, and as I have said to the Jews, 'Where I am going you cannot come.' And so now I tell you: A fresh commandment I give you - that you love one another, just as I have loved you, so that you would also love one another. And from this everyone will know that you are My disciples - if you have love for each other" (J 13:33-35).

Who is the Greatest
(number two)

60 Now there was also an argument among them that had started a little while back35 as to which one of them would be considered the greatest. So He told them again, "The kings of the nations lord it over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called 'benefactors.' But it is not that way among you. With you, the one who is the greatest will be the one who becomes as the youngest, and the one who leads will be the one who is as a servant" (L 22:24-26).

61 "For who is greater: The one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at the table? Yet, I am among you as the One who serves" (L 22:27).

62 "You are those who have remained with Me through My trials, and that is why I have placed upon you the kingdom, just as My Father placed it upon Me, so that you can eat and drink at My table, in My kingdom. And you will also, each, sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel" (L 22:28-30).

Satan Asks to Sift Simon

63 Then the Lord said,

"Simon, Simon, look, the Enemy36 has asked for you, so that he can sift you like wheat.37 But I have asked earnestly on your behalf, that your faith would not be put to an end. And so, once you have returned, strengthen your brothers" (L 22:31-32).

64 Then Jesus said, "You will all stumble tonight because of Me, for it is written:

'I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'
(Zechariah 13:7)

But then, after I am raised, I will go ahead of you into Galilee" (11:89M 26:31-32, 11:89K 14:27-2811:89).

65 Simon Peter asked Him: "Lord, where are You going?" (J 13:36a).

66 "Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now. But you will follow Me later" (J 13:36b).

67 "Lord, why can't I follow You now?" Peter said, "I would lay my life down for You, Lord. I am ready to go with You both into prison and to death. Then Peter declared, "Even if everyone else stumbles because of You, I will never stumble" (M 26:33, K 14:29, L 22:33, J 13:37).

68 "Will you really lay your life down on My behalf," Jesus asked? "Well, I assure you, today (it being, sometime after 6 PM on Wednesday, which was the beginning of Thursday in that culture), while it is still night, before the rooster crows twice, you will have denied three times that you even know Me" (M 26:34, K 14:30, L 22:34, J 13:38).

69 Then Peter said with even more conviction, "Even if I have to die with You Lord, I will not deny You!" (M 26:35a, K 14:31a).

70 The rest of the disciples said this as well (M 26:35b11:135, K 14:31b11:135).

Sell Your Garments and Buy a Sword

71 Then Jesus said, "When I sent you out without a wallet, a bag, and sandals, did you lack anything?" (L 22:35a).

72 "Not a thing," they answered (L 22:35b).

73 "Now, however, whoever has a wallet, he should take it, as well as a bag. And whoever does not have a sword, he should sell his clothes and buy one. For I tell you, the written prophecy that says

'He was counted along with the lawless men'
(Isaiah 53:12)

needs to happen" (L 22:36-37).

74 So then they said, "Look, Lord, here are two daggers" (L 22:38a).

I Go to Prepare a Place for You

75 He said, "It is enough.38 Do not let your heart be stirred up. Trust in God and trust in Me. In My Father's house there are many rooms. If there were not, I would have told you" (L 22:38b, J 14:1-2a).

76 "However, from now on, I am going there to prepare a place for you. And since I am going there to prepare a place for you, I will come again to receive you so that you will be there with Me. And this is so that where I am, you and I will be there together. And to where I'm going, you now also know the way"39 (J 14:2b-4).

If You've Seen Me, You Have Seen the Father

77 Then Thomas said, "Lord, we do not even know where it is You are going so how can we know how to get there?" (J 14:5).

78 "I am the way, the truth, and the life," Jesus said. "No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you had known Me, you would have also known My Father. And from now on you do know Him, and you have seen Him" (J 14:6-7).

79 So then Philip said, "Lord, just show us the Father and that will be enough for us" (J 14:8).

80 "Have I been here with you this long Philip, and you still do not know Me? He who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father?' Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? For I do not tell you these things from Myself, but the Father who dwells within Me is doing His work.40 Believe Me when I say, I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me. Or simply believe this from just the works themselves" (J 14:9-11).

You Will Do Greater Works

81 "And with absolute certainty you can count on this: He who believes in Me will also do the works I do. In fact, he will even do greater works than these. For I am going to My Father, and whatever you ask in My name, that is what I will do. And this, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name,41 I will do it!" (J 14:12-14).

82 "If you love Me, keep My commandments" (J 14:15).

I Will Not Leave You as Orphans

83 "Now I will ask the Father, and He will give you another One - One called to be alongside you as a helper.42 He will be with you forever - the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive. And the world cannot receive Him because the world does not see or know Him. But you do know Him since He is dwelling with you, and will soon be in you. I will not leave you as orphans, but I will come to you" (J 14:16-18).

84 "It will only be a little while longer; then the world will not see Me any more, but you will see Me. For because I live, you will live as well. In that day, you will know that I am in My Father, you are in Me, and I am in you" (J 14:19-20).

85 "He who has My commandments and keeps them, he is the one who loves Me. And whoever loves Me will be loved by My Father. And I also will love him and make Myself known to him" (J 14:21).

86 Then Judas (not Iscariot said to Him, "Lord, what has happened that You will make Yourself known to us and not to the world?"43 (J 14:22).

87 Jesus answered, "If anyone loves Me, he will do what I say, and My Father will love him. We will come to him and make Our home with him. But he who does not love Me, does not do what I say. And the words you are hearing are not Mine but the Father's who sent Me" (J 14:23-24).

88 "Now I have told you this while I am still staying here with you. But the one who will be with you as the Helper - the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name - He will teach you everything and remind you of everything I have told you" (J 14:25-26).

89 "It is peace I leave with you. I give My peace to you; but not like the world does. Therefore, do not let your heart be troubled and do not be afraid" (J 14:27).

90 "You have heard Me tell you that I am going away, but that I will also come back to you again. And now, if you loved Me, you would have rejoiced in that, because My Father is greater than I am. And I have told you about this before it happens, so that when it does happen you can believe" (J 14:28-29).

91 "I will not be talking with you much longer, though. For the ruler of this world is on his way. However, he has nothing in me except that which he is about to do to Me.44 That with which the world will see and know that I love the Father, and that I do everything just as He commanded Me" (J 14:30-31a).

They Head Over to the Mount of Olives

92 Then, after singing a song,45 He said, "Get up and Let's go, we're leaving." Then they went out to the Mount of Olives (11:52M 26:3011:62, 11:52K 14:2611:62, J 14:31b).

I Am the True Vine

93 As they went, He said,46

"I am the true vine and My Father is the vinedresser: Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes it away. And every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes it so that it will bear even more fruit" (J 15:1-2).

94 "And through the word that I have spoken to you, you are already pruned branches. Nevertheless, abide in Me, as I abide in you. Because just as the branch cannot grow fruit of itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in Me" (J 15:3-4).

95 "I am the vine, you are the branches. Therefore, whoever remains in Me, as I abide in him, he will grow much fruit. But apart from Me you can do nothing. And if anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown away - like any other useless branch - and dries up. After which, they are then gathered up, thrown into the fire, and burned" (See Jeremiah 5:10) (J 15:5-6).

96 "But if you remain in Me and what47 I have told you remains in you, ask for anything you want and it will be done for you (See Psalms 37:4). And in this My Father is glorified, that you bring forth much fruit, verifying that you really are My disciples"48 (J 15:7-8).

This is My Commandment, that You Love One Another

97 "Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you. Therefore, remain in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will be remaining in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and remain in His love" (J 15:9-10).

98 "I have said these things to you so that My joy will be in you, and so that your joy may be made full. This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you" (J 15:11-12).

99 "No one has a greater love than this, than for someone to lay his life down for his friends. And you are My friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you servants because a servant does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends since I have made known to you everything I have heard from My Father" (J 15:13-15).

100 "Remember, you did not choose Me, but I have chosen you. And I have appointed you so that you could go and bring forth fruit - fruit that will last - so that whatever you ask for in My name, the Father can give it to you. And this is what I command you, that you love one another" (J 15:16-17).

A Servant is Not Greater than His Master

101 "Now if the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. However, if you were of the world, the world would love its own. But you are not of the world. I have chosen you out of the world, and this is the reason the world hates you" (J 15:18-19).

102 "Remember what I told you, 'A servant is not greater than his master:' If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you also. They will do all this to you because of My name and because they do not know the One who sent Me. But if they have kept My word, they will also keep yours" (J 15:20-21).

103 "If I had not come and said anything to them, they would have no sin. However, now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates Me also hates My Father. If I had not done the works among them that no one else has ever done, they would have no sin. But now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. And this has happened so that this - which is something even written in their own law - would be fulfilled"

'They hated Me without a cause.'
(Psalms 69:4)
(J 15:22-25).

If I Go, the Helper Will Come to You

104 "But when the Helper comes - the One called to be along side of you,49 the One whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who comes forward from the Father - He will testify about Me. And you also are bringing this testimony, since you have been with Me from the beginning" (J 15:26-27).

105 "Now I have told you these things beforehand, so that when they do happen, you will not stumble. For they are going to kick you out of the congregations. The time is going to come when whoever it is that kills you will think he is offering a service to God. But they will do these things to you because they have not known Me or the Father" (J 16:1-3).

106 "And I tell you this so that when the time does come, you will remember that I have already told you about it. I did not tell you these things at the beginning because I was still going to be here with you. However, for now, I am going to the One who sent Me" (J 16:4-5a).

A Little While and You Will Not See Me,
And Again a Little While and You Will See Me

107 "Even still, none of you ask Me, 'Where are You going?' Instead, since I have told you these things, your hearts have filled with sorrow" (J 16:5b-6).

108 "Well I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away, because if I don't, the One who comes along side to help you50 will not come. However, if I do go, I will be able to send Him to you" (J 16:7).

109 "When He does come, He will convince51 the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment - of sin because they do not believe in Me, of righteousness because I am going to My Father - and you will no longer be able to look at Me - and of judgment because the ruler of this world is judged" (J 16:8-11).

110 "I still have many other things to tell you, but you cannot handle them right now. The Spirit of truth, however, when He comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak from Himself. He will only say what He hears, announcing to you the things to come" (J 16:12-13).

111 "He will glorify Me, because He will take the things of Me and announce them to you. Everything the Father has is Mine, and that is why I have told you that 'He will take the things of Me and make them known to you.'" (J 16:14-15).

112 "And so it is, in a little while and you will no longer see Me, but again in a little while and you will see Me" (J 16:16).

113 Then some of His disciples said to each other, "What is this He is telling us: 'In a little while and you will no longer see Me, and again in a little while and you will see Me;' and saying, 'because I am going to the Father?'52 Then they said, "What is this He is saying, 'A little while?' We do not understand what He means" (J 16:17-18).

114 Jesus, knowing they had wanted to ask Him about this, said,

"Are you asking each other about what I said, 'In a little while and you will no longer see Me, and again in a little while and you will see Me?' Well this is for sure, you will weep and mourn. But the world will rejoice. You will be grieved. But your grief will turn into joy" (J 16:19-20).

115 "For it is like this: when a woman is in labor she is grieving because the time for her to give birth has come. But as soon as she has the child, she no longer remembers the agony she was in because of the joy she now has over a person being born into the world" (J 16:21).

116 "So then, you now, likewise, have sorrow; but I will see you again, and then your hearts will rejoice. And no one will take your joy away from you" (J 16:22).

117 "In that day you will not ask Me for anything; for I assure you, the Father will give you whatever you ask in My name. Up to now you have not asked anything in My name. But ask and you will receive so that your joy will be made complete" (J 16:23-24).

118 "I have told you these things in a figurative way now, but the time will come when I will no longer speak to you in this way. I will tell you about the Father straight out.53 In that day, you will make your requests in My name" (J 16:25-26a).

119 "I am not saying that I will ask the Father for you. For the Father Himself loves you because you have loved Me, and because you believe that I came forth from God" (J 16:26b-27).

120 "What I am saying is this: I came forth from the Father and have come into the world, and I am also going to leave the world again and go back to the Father" (J 16:28).

121 His disciples said, "Look! Now You are speaking plainly and not using any figures of speech. So now we can see that You know everything, and that You do not need anyone to question You. And it is in this that we believe You have come forth from God" (J 16:29-30).

122 Jesus answered,

"Now do you believe? Well, behold, the hour will come, and in fact it has already here, when you will all be scattered, each one into his own direction, and leave Me alone. Yet I am not alone. For the Father is with Me (See Mark 15:34).54 And I tell you this so that in Me you can have peace. In the world you will have tribulation but be confident, I have overcome the world" (J 16:31-33).

The Glory I Had With You Before the World Began

123 Jesus said this, then He lifted His eyes up to heaven55 and said,

"Father, the time has come: Glorify Your Son so that He may glorify You, just like You have given Him authority over all flesh, so that He may give everlasting life to those whom You have given Him" (J 17:1-2).

124 "And this is everlasting life - that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus, the Anointed One, whom You have sent. For I have glorified You on the earth, and I have completed the work You have given Me to do. So now, Father, glorify Me along with Yourself and with the glory I have had with You before the world even existed" (J 17:3-5).

Do Not Take Them Out of the World, but Keep Them From the Evil One

125 "I made Your name visible to the men You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, and You gave them to Me. And they have kept Your word. They recognize that everything You gave Me is from You. I have given them the words You have given Me, and they have received them. Now they really know that I came from along side of You, and they believe that You sent Me" (J 17:6-8).

126 "I ask this on their behalf. I do not ask on behalf of the world, but only on behalf of those whom You have given Me. For they are Yours. Everything that's Mine is Yours and Yours Mine, and I am glorified in this" (J 17:9-10).

127 "I am no longer in the world. For I am coming to You. But they are in the world. So then, in Your name, Holy Father, guard those whom You have given Me, so that they may be one just as We are one" (J 17:11).

128 "While I was with them I guarded them in Your name. I have guarded those whom You have given Me, and none of them have been destroyed - that is except the son of destruction, and this so that Scripture would come into being. And, now, I am coming to You" (J 17:12-13a).

129 "I say these things while I am in the world so that they may have My joy made full among them" (J 17:13b).

130 "I have given them Your word, and the world has hated them. But the world hates them because they are not of the world, just like I am not of the world. And I do not ask You to take them out of the world but only that You would protect them56 from the evil one" (J 17:14-15).

131 "They are not of the world, just like I am not of the world. So set them apart from the world by Your truth.57 Your word is truth!" (J 17:16-17).

132 "And Just like You have sent Me into the world, I have, in like manner, sent them into the world. I have set Myself apart from the world for their sakes, so that they also may be set apart by knowing the truth"58 (J 17:18-19).

I Am in the Father, He is in Me, and I Am in You

133 "I do not ask for them alone, but I also ask for those who will believe in Me through their word. And I ask this so that they can all be one, just as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You - that they also may be one in Us. And this, so that the world may believe You sent Me" (J 17:20-21).

134 "And, now, the glory You have given Me, I have given to them, so that they can be one just as We are one - I in them and You in Me. And this is so that they can be brought into complete unity, and so that the world could know You sent Me; and that You have loved them, just as You have loved Me" (J 17:22-23).

135 "And Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, may be with Me, where I am, so that they may behold My glory, the glory which You have given Me. For You have loved Me before the foundations of the world were even laid down, righteous Father" (J 17:24-25a).

136 "The world has not known You, but I have known You. And these here, now, also know that You sent Me. I have made Your name known to them, and I will continue to make it known to them so that the love You have loved Me with may be in them, and I in them" (J 17:25b-26).

137 Jesus said these things as He went59 with His disciples over the gushing stream of the Kidron valley,60 out to the Mount of Olives where there was a garden called Gethsemane61 that He and His disciples were entering, as His custom was, with His disciples following Him (L 22:39, J 18:1).

Not My Will but Yours Be Done

138 Now Judas, the one who was betraying Him, had also known about this place because Jesus had often met there with His disciples (J 18:2).

139 And so it was, once Jesus had arrived with His disciples to the place called Gethsemane, He said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray" (11:67M 26:36, 11:68K 14:32, L 22:40a).

140 Then He took Peter, Jacob, and John (the two sons of Zebedee) with Him, and He began to grieve and be distressed. Then he said to them, "My soul is very sad, even to the point of death. So stay here with Me and watch. And pray that you will not enter into temptation" (M 26:37-38, K 14:33-34, L 22:40b).

141 Then He went a short distance further (about a stone's throw away), fell down on His knees, with His face to the ground,62 and prayed that, if it were possible, this hour could pass Him by, saying, "Daddy.63 My Father. Everything is possible for you. . . . If it is your will, take this wine cup away from Me. Yet not My will but Yours be done" (M 26:39, K 14:35-36, L 22:41-42).

142 Then He came back to the disciples and found them asleep. So He said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn't you even watch with Me for just one hour? But watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. The spirit certainly is willing, but the flesh is weak" (M 26:40-41, K 14:37-38, L 22:46).

143 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying the same thing: "My Father, if this cup cannot pass Me by unless I drink from it, Your will be done." Then He went back and found them asleep again because their eyes were heavy. Yet, they did not know how to answer Him (M 26:42-43, K 14:39-40).

144 Then He left and went away again to pray, a third time, and said the same thing (M 26:44).

145 This time, however, an angel from heaven came to strengthen Him. But being in agony, He prayed even more intensely, to where His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground (L 22:43-44).

146 Then when He got up from praying the third time, He came to His disciples and found them asleep again. But this time from sorrow.64 So he said to them, "Are you still asleep and resting? Well, that is enough. The time has come. For behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up. Let's go. Look, the one who is betraying Me is almost here" (M 26:45-46, K 14:41-42, L 22:45).

Jesus Arrested

147 While He was still saying this, behold, Judas (who was one of the twelve), having received a company of soldiers, came, bringing them,65 as well as some of the security guards of the chief priests, along with the Pharisees, the scribes, and elders of the people - a large crowd carrying torches, lanterns, and weapons, such as clubs and daggers (M 26:47, K 14:43, L 22:47a, J 18:3 & 5b).

148 Before this, however, the one who was betraying Jesus had given those who were going to arrest Him a sign, saying, "Whichever one I kiss, He is the One. Arrest Him. But take and lead Him away safely."66 And so with this as the plan, he came and immediately went up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi" (M 26:48-49, K 14:44-45a).

149 Jesus said to Judas, "Friend, why have you come?" Then Judas came close and kissed Him. "Judas!" Jesus said, "Are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" (M 26:50a12:1, K 14:45b12:1, L 22:47c-48).

150 Then Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen to Him, came forward, and said, "Who are you looking for?" (J 18:4).

151 "Jesus of Nazareth," they answered" (J 18:5a).

152 "I AM,"67 Jesus said.

153 When He had said "I AM," they backed up and fell,68 with their faces to the ground.

154 So then He asked them again, "Who are you looking for?" (L 22:47b but not c, J 18:6-7a).

155 They said, "Jesus of Nazareth" (J 18:7b).

156 "I told you. I am," Jesus answered (J 18:8a).

157 Then Jesus said: "Therefore, since you are looking for Me, let these here go" (J 8:8b).

158 He had said this in fulfillment of what He had said before, "Out of the ones whom You have given Me, I have lost none" (See John 17:12) (J 18:9).

159 Then when those who were staying with Him had seen what was about to happen, they said to Him, "Lord, should we attack with our sword?" And Simon Peter, having one of the daggers69 they had at the Passover meal, reached out and drew it, striking out at the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. That servant's name was Malchus (12:1M 26:51, K 14:47, L 22:49-50, J 18:10).

160 But Jesus said to Peter, "Put your dagger back into its sheath. For everyone who takes up the sword will be destroyed by the sword. Do not respond in this way. Allow even this"70 (M 26:52, L 22:51, J 18:11a).

161 Then Jesus took Malchus'71 ear, healed it back on, and said, "Should I not drink the cup My Father has given Me to drink? Do you not think I could encourage72 My Father, and He would not immediately let Me have more than twelve whole armies full of angels for protection? However, if that were the case, how would the Scriptures that say this must happen be fulfilled?" (M 26:53-54, J 18:11b).

162 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the Temple, and the elders who had come out to find Him, "Have you come out to get Me with daggers and clubs, as if I was a robber, when this whole time I had been sitting with you in the House of God, everyday, teaching, and you did not arrest Me? However, this is the time you have chosen under the authority of darkness."73 Then they grabbed Him and took Him away (M 26:50b & 55, 11:155K 14:48-49, L 22:52-53).

163 And all this had happened so that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled (M 26:56a).

164 Then all the disciples deserted Him and ran away (M 26:56b, K 14:50).

165 Now there was also a young man following Him74 who had thrown a fine linen cloth on over himself but was naked underneath. And so it was, they grabbed hold of him. But he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked (K 14:51-52).
